چکیده

Structural deterioration is becoming a major problem when considering long term performance of infrastructures. The existence of a corrosive environment, cyclic loading and concrete cracking cause structural strength degradation. The interaction of these conditions can only be taken into account when modeling the coupled action. In this paper, a new model to assess lifetime of RC structures subject to corrosion-fatigue deterioration processes, is proposed. Separately, corrosion leads to cross section reduction while fatigue induces the nucleation and the propagation of cracks in steel bars. When considered together, pitting corrosion nucleates the crack while environmental factors a↵ect the kinematics of crack propagation. The model is applied to the reliability analysis of bridge girders located in di↵erent chloride-contaminated environments. Overall results show that the coupled e↵ect of corrosion-fatigue on RC structures a↵ects strongly its performance leading to large reduction in the expected lifetime.

Assessing the Performance of Corroding RC Bridge Decks: A Critical Review of Corrosion Propagation Models

Corrosion of steel reinforcement is one of the most prevalent causes of reinforced concrete (RC) structures deterioration in chloride-contaminated environments. As a result, evaluating the impact of any possible corrosion-induced damages to reinforced concrete bridges strongly affects management decisions: such as inspection, maintenance and repair actions. The corrosion propagation phase is a ...

Time-Dependent Structural Behavior of Repaired Corroded RC Columns Located in a Marine Site

The chloride corrosion of reinforcing steel in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is a significant reason for premature deterioration and failure of RC structures in aggressive environments such as Persian Gulf region. This is one of the most important sources of engineering and economic problems in developed countries. So, the repair and maintenance of RC structures exposed to corrosive envir...

Modeling of Chloride Concentration Effect on Reinforcement Corrosion

The corrosion of reinforcement is one of the major causes of deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, considerably affecting their durability and reliability. The rate of reinforcement corrosion is governed by, among other factors, the presence of chlorides on the surface of the steel. The assessment of such deteriorating effects necessitates the development of relevant models and ...

Reliability of Reinforced Concrete Structures Subjected to Corrosion-Fatigue and Climate Change

Durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is affected by certain environmental conditions and operational actions which can reduce their lifetime significantly. Among these actions, this paper proposes a stochastic model that accounts for the combined effects of chloride-induced corrosion, climate change and cyclic loading. Separately, corrosion leads to cross-section reduction, climate...

Life-cycle cost analysis of reinforced concrete structures in marine environments

Chloride-induced corrosion of carbon steel reinforcement is the main cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in marine environments. One of the ways to protect RC structures from corrosion is to use corrosion-resistant stainless steel reinforcing bars. However, stainless steel is between six and nine times more expensive than carbon steel. Thus, its use can only be justifi...
